When the Right Crop Meets the Right Land: One Acre's Second Chance

For years, one acre of Rupali Ravindra Dudhane's farmland lay fallow. In Nand village, in Maharashtra's Pune district, limited water availability and highly porous soil made the plot difficult to cultivate. Season after season, most crops failed to take root, and the land was reduced to growing fodder for the family's livestock, contributing little to the household's income.
Rupali managed the farming and dairy work on her own, tending to the land and the family's cattle, while her husband worked as a daily-wage laborer at a local brick kiln to supplement their earnings. Between the two incomes, the family got by, but the fallow acre remained a missed opportunity, a resource that wasn't earning its keep.
That changed when Rupali attended a village awareness program on bamboo cultivation. Listening to the discussion, she realized the problem was not the land itself. It was choosing a crop that could survive there. Bamboo, she learned, was suited to exactly the kind of dry, porous soil that had defeated her earlier attempts at farming.
Rupali decided to put her fallow acre to the test. Through the program, she received 60 bamboo saplings, 300 kilograms of vermicompost, hydrogel to improve moisture retention, and ongoing technical guidance on plantation practices and care.
With this support, Rupali began preparing the fallow land for planting, applying the vermicompost to enrich the soil, using hydrogel to help the saplings retain moisture through dry spells, and following the guidance she received on spacing, care, and irrigation.
Less than a year later, healthy bamboo now stands where nothing else would grow. The plants have reached between four and ten feet in height, with each producing three to four new shoots, a strong indicator that the plantation is well established and thriving.
As the plantation matures, Rupali is already planning her next step: cultivating Rabi intercrops between the bamboo rows. Intercropping matters here because bamboo takes time to reach full maturity, and the space between young plants would otherwise sit fallow. By growing seasonal Rabi crops in these gaps, Rupali can generate additional income in the near term, improve soil health through crop diversity, and make more efficient use of every part of her land, all without competing with the bamboo's growth.
Reflecting on her journey, Rupali says:
"Earlier, this land remained fallow because we did not have enough water to cultivate other crops. Today, seeing healthy bamboo growing on the same land gives me great happiness. My husband and family have supported me throughout this journey, and together we look forward to building a better future through bamboo farming."
The acre that once produced little more than fodder is now expected to support multiple crops, healthier soil, and a long-term source of income. What was once seen as unproductive will become one of the family's most valuable assets.This effort is part of REAL (Regenerative Agroforestry and Livelihoods), Industree Foundation's initiative to build climate-adaptive livelihoods for smallholder women farmers in India. In Maharashtra, the initiative is being implemented through Roots to Rise, supported by Infosys Foundation, enabling 1,000 women farmers in Junnar and Bhor, Pune district, to cultivate bamboo, diversify their incomes, and strengthen climate adaptability.
